A quick note here: Many of these artists had more than the one hit and are not literally "wonders" --- some, such as Harry Nilsson, actually had extraordinary musical careers. However, I placed them here because they only had one song that I didn't want to make separate pages for each song, so I lumped them all in here whether or not they objectively deserve being labelled as such. As a serendipitous effect, I also enjoy having such an eclectic list ;-) Of course, many of these artists really were "one hit wonders" who came and went in the blink of an eye, leaving their single impression on the world. |
At first I was afraid I was petrified Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side But then I spent so many nights Thinkin' how you did me wrong And I grew strong I learned how to get along And so you're back from outer space I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face I should have changed that stupid lock I would have made you leave your key If I'd have known for just one second you'd be back to bother me Go on now, go Walk out the door Just turn around now You're not welcome anymore Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye Did I crumble Did you think I'd lay down and die? Oh no not I I will survive Oh, as long as I know how to love I know I'll stay alive I've got all my life to live I've got all my love to give And I'll survive I will survive Hey hey It took all the strength I had not to fall apart Kept trying' hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart And I spent oh so many nights Just feeling sorry for myself I used to cry But now I hold my head up high And you see in me Somebody new I'm not that chained up little person still in love with you And so you feel like droppin' in And just expect me to be free But I'm savin' all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me [chorus]
Doctors have come from distant cities just to see me Stand over my bed disbelieving what they're seeing They say I must be one of the wonders of God's own creation And as far as they can see they can offer no explanation Newspapers ask intimate questions want confessions They reach into my head to steal the glory of my story They say I must be one of the wonders of God's own creation And as far as they can see they can offer no explanation I believe Fate smiled and Destiny Laughed as she came to my cradle: "Know this child will be able" Laughed as my body she lifted: "Know this child will be gifted With love, with patience and with faith, she'll make her way" People see me I'm a challenge to your balance I'm over your heads how I confound you and astound you To know I must be one of the wonders of God's own creation And as far as they can see they can offer me no explanation I believe Fate smiled and Destiny Laughed as she came to my cradle: "Know this child will be able" Laughed as she came to my mother: "Know this child will not suffer" Laughed as my body she lifted: "Know this child will be gifted With love, with patience and with faith, she'll make her way"
You got a fast car I want a ticket to anywhere Maybe we make a deal Maybe together we can get somewhere Anyplace is better Starting from zero got nothing to lose Maybe we'll make something But me myself I got nothing to prove You got a fast car And I got a plan to get us out of here I been working at the convenience store Managed to save just a little bit of money We won't have to drive too far Just 'cross the border and into the city You and I can both get jobs And finally see what it means to be living You see my old man's got a problem He lives with the bottle, that's the way it is He says his body's too old for working I say his body's too young to look like this My mama went off and left him She wanted more from life than he could give I said "somebody's got to take care of him" So I quit school and that's what I did You got a fast car But is it fast enough so we can fly away We gotta make a decision We leave tonight or live and die this way I remember we were driving, driving in your car The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk City lights lay out before us And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder And I had a feeling that I belonged And I had a feeling I could be someone Be someone Be someone You got a fast car And we go cruising to entertain ourselves You still ain't got a job And I work in a market as a checkout girl I know things will get better You'll find work and I'll get promoted We'll move out of the shelter Buy a big house and live in the suburbs You got a fast car And I got a job that pays all our bills You stay out drinking late at the bar See more of your friends than you do of your kids I'd always hoped for better Thought maybe together you and me would find it I got no plans I ain't going nowhere So take your fast car and keep on driving You got a fast car But is it fast enough so you can fly away You gotta make a decision You leave tonight or live and die this way

The Salvation Army band played And the children drank lemonade And the morning lasted all day, all day And through an open window came Like Sinatra in a younger day Pushing the town away Life in a Northern town He sat on a stony ground And he took a cigarette out And everyone else came down to listen He said "In Winter 1963 It felt like the world would freeze With John F. Kennedy and the Beatles" Life in a northern town All of the world shut down In the evening we'd talk too late Watch the water run down the drain As we followed him down to the station And though he never rode away goodbye You could see it written in his eye As the train rolled out of sight bye bye Life in a northern town
If you see something that looks like a star And it's shooting up out of the ground And your head is spinning from a loud guitar And you just can't escape from the sound Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you We were children once, playing with toys And the thing that you're hearing is only the sound Of the low spark of high-heeled boys The percentage you're paying is too high a price While you're living beyond all your means And the man in the suit has just bought a new car From the profit he's made on your dreams But today you just read that the man was shot dead By a gun that didn't make any noise But it wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest Was the low spark of high-heeled boys If you had just a minute to breath And they granted you one final wish Would you ask for something like another chance Or something similar as this Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you As sure as your sorrows are joys And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound Of the low spark of high-heeled boys The percentage you're paying is too high a price While you're living beyond all your means And the man in the suit has just bought a new car From the profit he's made on your dreams But today you just read that the man was shot dead By a gun that didn't make any noise But it wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest T'was the low spark of high-heeled boys If I gave you everything that I owned And asked for nothing in return Would you do the same for me as I would for you? Or take me for a ride And strip me of everything, including my pride? But spirit is something that no one destroys And the sound that you're hearing is only the sound Of the low spark of high-heeled boys
Here in my car I feel safest of all I can lock all my doors It's the only way to live In cars Here in my car I can only receive I can listen to you It keeps me stable for days In cars Here in my car The image breaks down Will you visit me please If I open my door In cars Here in my car I know I've started to think About leaving tonight Although nothing seems right In cars I know I've started to think I know I've started to think

Well it's been ten years and a thousand tears and look at the mess I'm in A broken nose and a broken heart, an empty bottle of gin Well I sit and I pray in my broken down Chevrolet While I'm singing to myself: there's got to be another way Take away, take away, take away this ball and chain Well I'm lonely and I'm tired and I can't take any more pain Take away, take away, never to return again Take away, take away, take awaaaaaay . . . take away this ball and chain Well I've searched and I've searched to find the perfect life A brand new car and a brand new suit --- I even got me a little wife But wherever I have gone I was sure to find myself there You can run all your life but not go anywhere [chorus] Well I'll pass the bar on the way to my dingy hotel room I spent all my money --- I've been drinking since half past noon Well I'll wake there in the morning or maybe in the county jail Times are hard and getting harder; I'm going to lose and destined to fail [chorus]
When a man loves a woman Can't keep his mind on nothing else He'll trade the world For the good thing he's found If she's bad he can't see it She can do no wrong Turn his back on his best friend If he put her down When a man loves a woman Spend his very last dime Tryin' to hold on to what he needs He'd give up all his comfort Sleep out in the rain If she said that's the way it ought to be Well, this man loves a woman I gave you everything I had Tryin' to hold on to your precious love Baby, please don't treat me bad When a man loves a woman Down deep in his soul She can bring him such misery If she plays him for a fool He's the last one to know Lovin' eyes can't ever see When a man loves a woman He can do no wrong He can never own some other girl Yes when a man loves a woman I know exactly how he feels 'Cause baby, baby, baby, you're my world When a man loves a woman

It's Christmastime There's no need to be afraid At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world at Christmastime But say a prayer Pray for the other ones At Christmastime it's hard, but when you're having fun There's a world outside your window And it's a world of dread and fear Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears And the Christmas bells that ring there Are the clanging chimes of doom Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you And there won't be snow in Africa This Christmastime The greatest gift they'll get this year is life Where nothing ever grows No rain nor rivers flow Do they know it's Christmastime at all? Here's to you --- raise a glass for everyone Here's to them --- underneath that burning sun Do they know it's Christmastime at all? Feed the world Feed the world Feed the world Let them know it's Christmastime again Feed the world Let them know it's Christmastime again
Ain't it good Ain't it right That you are with me Here tonight The music playin' Our bodies swayin' in time (In time, in time, in time) Touching you So warm and tender Lord, I feel such a sweet surrender Beautiful is the dream that makes you mine Mmm Rock me gently Rock me slowly Take it easy Don't you know That I have never been loved like this before Baby baby! Bang, bang, shoot em' up, destiny Bang, bang, shoot em' up to the moon Bang, bang, shoot em' up one, two, three (One, two, three, four!) I wanted to be a spaceman That's what I wanted to be But now that I am a spaceman Nobody cares about me Hey mother earth Won't 'cha bring me back down Safely to the sea But 'round and around and around and around Is all she ever say to me I wanted to make a good run I wanted to go to the moon I knew that it had to be fun I told 'em to send me real soon I wanted to be a spaceman I wanted to be it so bad But now that I am a spaceman I'd rather be back on the pad Hey mother earth Won't 'cha bring me back down Safely to the sea But 'round and around and around and around Is just a lot of lunacy (Yeah!) 'Round and around and around and around and around (So bring me back down) 'Round and around and around and around and around Safe on the ground Hey mother earth Won't 'cha bring me back down Safely to the sea But 'round and around and around and around Is all she ever say to me, yeah You know I wanted to be a spaceman That's what I wanted to be But now that I am a spaceman Nobody cares about me Say, hey! You mother earth You better bring me back down I've taken just as much as I can But around and around and around and around Is the problem of a spaceman

Seventy-three men sailed up From the San Francisco Bay Rolled off of their ship And here's what they had to say "We're callin' everyone to ride along To another shore We can laugh our lives away and be free once more." But no one heard them callin' No one came at all 'Cause they were too busy watchin' Those old raindrops fall As a storm was blowin' Out on the peaceful sea Seventy-three men sailed off To history Ride, captain ride Upon your mystery ship Be amazed at the friends You have here on your trip Ride captain ride Upon your mystery ship On your way to a world That others might have missed

Something tells you that you've got to get away from it Father gets up late for work Mother has to iron his shirt Then she sends the kids to school Sees them off with a small kiss She's the one they're going to miss In lots of ways Our house, in the middle of our street Our house, in the middle of our . . . I remember way back then when everything was true and when We would have such a very good time such a fine time Such a happy time And I remember how we'd play simply waste the day away Then we'd say nothing would come between us two dreamers Father wears his Sunday best Mother's tired she needs a rest The kids are playing up downstairs Sister's sighing in her sleep Brother's got a date to keep He can't hang around Our house, in the middle of our street Our house, in the middle of our street Our house, in the middle of our street Our house, in the middle of our . . . Our house, was our castle and our keep Our house, in the middle of our street Our house, that was where we used to sleep Our house, in the middle of our street Our house . . .

The silicon chip inside her head Gets switched to overload And nobody's gonna go to school today She's going to make them stay at home And Daddy doesn't understand it He always said she was as good as gold And he can see no reason 'Cause there are no reasons What reason do you need to be shown? (Tell me why) I don't like Mondays (Tell me why) I don't like Mondays (Tell me why) I don't like Mondays I want to shoot the whole day down The Telex machine is kept so clean As it types to a waiting world And Mother feels so shocked Father's world is rocked And their thoughts turn to their own little girl Sweet Sixteen! Ain't that peachy keen? No, it ain't so neat to admit defeat They can see *no reasons* 'Cause there are *no reasons* What reasons do you need? [chorus] And now the playing's stopped in the playground now She wants to play with her toys a while And school's out early and soon we'll be learning And the lesson today is how to die And then the bullhorn crackles And the captain tackles With the problems and the how's and why's And he can see *no reasons* 'Cause there are *no reasons* What reason do you need to die? [chorus]

And the sign said "Long haired freaky people need not apply" So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do" So I took off my hat and said "Imagine that --- me working for you!" Sign Sign everywhere a sign Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind "Do this!" "Don't do that!" Can't you read the sign? And the sign said anybody caught trespassing would be shot on sight So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house, "Hey, what gives you the right? To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep Mother Nature in If God was here, he'd tell you to your face, man you're some kinda sinner" [Chorus] Now, hey you Mister! Can't you read? You got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat You can't even watch, no you can't eat You ain't suppose to be here The sign said you got to have a membership card to get inside And the sign said everybody welcome, come in, kneel down and pray But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all I didn't have a penny to pay So I got me a pen and a paper And I made up my own little sign I said "Thank you, Lord, for thinking about me I'm alive and doin' fine" [Chorus] [Chorus]

Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed Some say love it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed Some say love it is a hunger, an endless aching need I say love it is a flower and you its only seed It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes a chance It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose

I learned the truth at seventeen That love was meant for beauty queens And high school girls with clear skinned smiles Who married young and then retired The valentines I never knew The Friday night charades of youth Were spent on one more beautiful At seventeen I learned the truth And those of us with ravaged faces Lacking in the social graces Desperately remained at home Inventing lovers on the phone Who called to say come dance with me And murmured vague obscenities It isn't all it seems At seventeen A brown eyed girl in hand me downs Whose name I never could pronounce Said, pity please the ones who serve They only get what they deserve The rich relationed hometown queen Married into what she needs A guarantee of company And haven for the elderly Remember those who win the game Lose the love they sought to gain Indebentures of quality And dubious integrity Their small town eyes will gape at you In dull surprise when payment due Exceeds accounts received At seventeen To those of us who know the pain Of valentines that never came And those whose names were never called When choosing sides for basketball It was long ago and far away The world was younger than today And dreams were all they gave for free To ugly duckling girls like me We all play the game and when we dare To cheat ourselves at solitaire Inventing lovers on the phone Repenting other lives unknown That call and say, come dance with me And murmur vague obscenities At ugly girls like me At seventeen
Ho, ho, ho It's magic you know Never believe, it's not so It's magic, you know Never believe, it's not so Never been awake Never seen a day break Leaning on my pillow in the morning Lazy day in bed Music in my head Crazy music playing in the morning light I love my sunny day Dream of far away Dreaming on my pillow in the morning Never been awake Never seen a day break Leaning on my pillow in the morning light
Six a.m. day after Christmas I throw some clothes on in the dark The smell of cold Car seat is freezing The world is sleeping and I am numb Up the stairs to her apartment She is balled up on the couch Her mom and dad went down to Charlotte They're not home to find us out And we drive Now that I have found someone I'm feeling more alone Than I ever have before She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly Off the coast and I'm headed nowhere She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly They call her name at 7:30 I pace around the parking lot Then I walk down to buy her flowers And sell some gifts that I got Can't you see It's not me you're dying for Now she's feeling more alone Than she ever has before [chorus] As weeks went by It showed that she was not fine They told me son its time To tell the truth And she broke down and I broke down cause I was tired of lying Driving back to her apartment For the moment were alone She's alone And I'm alone Now I know it
I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listened as the crowd would sing "Now the old king is dead, long live the king" One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain Once you'd gone there was never Never an honest word And that was when I ruled the world It was a wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn't believe what I'd become Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh, who would ever want to be king? I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing Roman cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world
We've been together since way back when Sometimes I never want to see you again But I want you to know, after all these years You're still the one I want whisperin' in my ear You're still the one I want to talk to in bed Still the one that turns my head We're still having fun And you're still the one I looked at your face every day But I never saw it 'til I went away When winter came, I just wanted to go (wanted to go) Deep in the desert, I longed for the snow You're still the one that makes me laugh Still the one that's my better half We're still having fun And you're still the one You're still the one that makes me strong Still the one I want to take along We're still having fun And you're still the one (yes you are) Changing, our love is going gold Even though we grow old, it grows new You're still the one that I love to touch Still the one and I can't get enough We're still having fun And you're still the one You're still the one who can scratch my itch Still the one and I wouldn't switch We're still having fun And you're still the one You are still the one that makes me shout Still the one that I dream about We're still having fun And you're still the one You're still the one Yeah still the one We're still having fun And you're still the one
This bed is on fire with passionate love The neighbors complain about the noises above But she only comes when she's on top The therapist said not to see you no more She said you're like a disease without any cure She said I'm so obsessed that I'm becoming a bore Ah you think you're so pretty Caught your hand inside the till Slammed your fingers in the door Fought with kitchen knives and skewers Dressed me up in womens' clothes Messed around with gender roles Line my eyes and call me pretty Moved out of the house, so you moved next door I locked you out, you cut a hole in the wall I found you sleeping next to me, I thought I was alone You're driving me crazy --- when are you coming home Laid Laid
I get the same old dreams, same time every night Fall to the ground and I wake up So I get out of bed, put on my shoes, and in my head Thoughts fly back to the breakup These four walls are closing in Look at the fix you've put me in Since you've been gone Since you've been gone I'm outta my head, can't take it Could I be wrong, but since you've been gone You cast the spell, so break it Since you've been gone So in the night I stand beneath the backstreet light I read the words that you sent to me I can take the afternoon The nighttime comes around too soon You can't know what you mean to me Your poison letter, your telegram Just goes to show you don't give a damn [chorus] If you will come back Baby you know You'll never do wrong [chorus] Ever since you've been gone
No, I can't forget this evening Or your face as you were leaving But I guess that's just the way the story goes You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows Yes, it shows No, I can't forget tomorrorow When I think of all my sorrows When I had you there but then I let you go And now it's only fair that I should let you know What you should know I can't live if living is without you I can't live, I can't give any more Can't live if living is without you I can't give, I can't give any more No, I can't forget this evening Or your face as you were leaving But I guess that's just the way the story goes You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows Yes, it shows
Step one: you say we need to talk He walks you say sit down it's just a talk He smiles politely back at you You stare politely right on through Some sort of window to your right As he goes left and you stay right Between the lines of fear and blame You begin to wonder why you came Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life Let him know that you know best Cause after all you do know best Try to slip past his defense Without granting innocence Lay down a list of what is wrong The things you've told him all along And pray to God he hears you And pray to God he hears you [chorus] As he begins to raise his voice You lower yours and grant him one last choice Drive until you lose the road Or break with the ones you've followed He will do one of two things He will admit to everything Or he'll say he's just not the same And you'll begin to wonder why you came [chorus] [chorus] [chorus]
I got a little change in my pocket goin' jing-a-ling-a-ling Wants to call you on the telephone baby, a-give you a ring But each time we talk, I get the same old thing Always "no hugg-ee no kiss-ee until I get a weddin' ring" My honey my baby, don't put my love upon no shelf She said "Don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself" B-b-b-baby baby baby why you wan' treat me this way You know I'm still your lover boy I still feel the same way That's when she told me a story, 'bout free milk and a cow And said "no hugg-ee no kiss-ee until I get a weddin' vow" My honey my baby, don't put my love upon no shelf She said "Don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself" (Go man go) Hold it here See I wanted her real bad, and I was about to give in But that's when she started talking about true love started talking about sin And I said, honey I'll live with you for the rest of my life She said "no hugg-ee no kiss-ee until you make me your wife" My honey my baby, don't put my love upon no shelf She said "Don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself"
I remember when Mary Lou said "You wanna walk me home from school?" Well I said, "Yes, I do" She said, "I don't have to go right home And I'm the kind that likes to be alone As long as you would" I said, "Me, too" And so we took a stroll Wound up down by the swimmin' hole And she said, "Do what you want to do" I got silly and found a frog In the water by a hollow log And I shook it at her And I said "This frog's for you" She said... I don't like spiders and snakes And that ain't what it takes to love me You fool, you fool I don't like spiders and snakes And that ain't what it takes to love me Like I want to be loved by you Well, I think of that girl from time to time I call her up when I got a dime I say, "Hello, baby" She says, "Ain't you cool" I say, "Do you remember when? And would you like to get together again?" She says, "I'll see you after school" I was shy and so for a while Most of my love was touch and smile Til she said, "Come on over here" I was nervous as you might guess Still looking for somethin' to slip down her dress And she said, "Let's make it perfectly clear" She said... [chorus]
Oh, we're not gonna take it No, we ain't gonna take it Oh, we're not gonna take it anymore We've got the right to choose it There ain't no way we'll lose it This is our life, this is our song We'll fight the powers that be, just Don't pick our destiny, 'cause You don't know us, you don't belong [chorus] Oh, you're so condescending Your gall is never ending We don't want nothin', not a thing from you Your life is trite and jaded Boring and confiscated If that's your best, your best won't do Oh, Oh We're right (yeah) We're free (yeah) We'll fight (yeah) You'll see (yeah) [chorus] [chorus] No way Oh, Oh We're right (yeah) We're free (yeah) We'll fight (yeah) You'll see (yeah) [chorus] [chorus] Just you try and make us We're not gonna take it Come on No, we ain't gonna take it You're all worthless and weak We're not gonna take it anymore Now drop and give me twenty We're not gonna take it Oh, crinch pin No, we ain't gonna take it Oh, you and your uniform We're not gonna take it anymore
Come on, feel the noise Girls, rock your boys We'll get wild, wild, wild Wild, wild, wild So you think I got an evil mind I'll tell you honey And I don't know why And I don't know why So you think my singing's out of time It makes me money And I don't know why And I don't know why anymore Oh no [chorus] [chorus] Until dawn So you think I got a funny face I got no worries And I don't know why And I don't know why So I'm a scruff bag well it's no disgrace I'm in no hurry And I don't know why I don't know why anymore Oh no [chorus] So you think we are the lazy type You should know better And I don't know why I don't know why And you say I got a dirty mind I'm a mean go getter And I don't know why And I don't know why anymore Oh no [chorus]
In a gadda da vida, honey Don't you know that I'm lovin' you In a gadda da vida, baby Don't you know that I'll always be true Oh, won't you come with me And take my hand Oh, won't you come with me And walk this land Please take my hand
Crazy But that's how it goes Millions of people living as foes Maybe it's not too late To learn how to love And forget how to hate Mental wounds not healing Life's a bitter shame I'm going off the rails on a crazy train I'm going off the rails on a crazy train I've listened to preachers I've listened to fools I've watched all the dropouts Who make their own rules One person conditioned to rule and control The media sells it and you live the role Mental wounds still screaming Driving me insane I'm going off the rails on a crazy train I'm going off the rails on a crazy train I know that things are going wrong for me You gotta listen to my words Yeh-h Heirs of a cold war That's what we've become Inheriting troubles I'm mentally numb Crazy I just cannot bear I'm living with something that just isn't fair Mental wounds not healing Who and what's to blame I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go Walkin' with a dead man over my shoulder Waiting for an invitation to arrive Goin' to a party where no one's still alive I was struck by lighting Walkin' down the street I was hit by something last night in my sleep It's a dead man's party Who could ask for more Everybody's comin', leave your body at the door Leave your body and soul at the door (Don't run away it's only me) All dressed up with nowhere to go Walkin' with a dead man Waitin' for an invitation to arrive With a dead man . . . Dead Man Got my best suit and my tie Shiny silver dollar on either eye I hear the chauffeur comin' to the door Says there's room for maybe just one more Don't run away it's only me Don't be afraid of what you can't see Don't run away it's only me
Love is but a song to sing Fear's the way we die You can make the mountains ring Or make the angels cry Though the bird is on the wing And you may not know why Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now Some may come and some may go We shall surely pass When the one that left us here Returns for us at last We are but a moment's sunlight Fading in the grass Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now If you hear the song I sing You will understand (listen!) You hold the key to love and fear All in your trembling hand Just one key unlocks them both It's there at you command

Oh, once upon a midnight dearie I woke with something in my head I couldn't escape the memory Of a phone call and of what you said Like a game show contestant with a parting gift I could not believe my eyes When I saw through the voice of a trusted friend Who needs to humor me and tell me lies Yeah humor me and tell me lies And I'll lie too and say I don't mind And as we seek so shall we find And when you're feeling open I'll still be here But not without a certain degree of fear Of what will be with you and me I still can see things hopefully But you Why you wanna give me a run-around Is it a sure-fire way to speed things up When all it does is sloooooooooow me down And shake me and my confidence About a great many things But I've been there I can see it cower Like a nervous magician waiting in the wings Of a bad play where the heroes are right And nobody thinks or expects too much And Hollywood's calling for the movie rights Singing "hey babe let's keep in touch" Hey baby let's keep in touch But I want more than a touch I want you to reach me And show me all the things no one else can see So what you feel becomes mine as well And soon if we're lucky we'd be unable to tell What's yours and mine the fishing's fine And it doesn't have to rhyme so don't you feed me a line [chorus] Tra la la la la bomba dear this is the pilot speaking And I've got some news for you It seems my ship still stands no matter what you drop And there ain't a whole lot that you can do Oh sure the banner may be torn and the wind's gotten colder Perhaps I've grown a little cynical But I know no matter what the waitress brings I shall drink in and always be full My cup shall always be full Oh I like coffee And I like tea I'd like to be able to enter a final plea I still got this dream that you just can't shake I love you to the point you can no longer take Well all right okay So be that way I hope and pray That there's something left to say [chorus] [chorus]

In a way, I need a change From this burnout scene Another time, another town Another everything But it's always back to you Stumble out, in the night From the pouring rain Made the block, sat and thought There's more I need It's always back to you But I'm good without ya Yeah, I'm good without you Yeah, yeah, yeah How many times can I break till I shatter? Over the line can't define what I'm after I always turn the car around Give me a break let me make my own pattern All that it takes is some time but I'm shattered I always turn the car around I had no idea that the night Would take so damn long Took it out, on the street While the rain still falls Push me back to you But I'm good without ya Yeah, I'm good without you Yeah, yeah, yeah [chorus] Give it up, give it up, baby Give it up, give it up, now Now How many times can I break till I shatter? Over the line can't define what I'm after I always turn the car around All that I feel is the realness I'm faking Taking my time but it's time that I'm wasting Always turn the car around [chorus] Don't wanna turn that car around I gotta turn this thing around
Day after day I'm more confused So I look for the light in the pouring rain You know that's a game that I hate to lose I'm feelin' the strain, ain't it a shame Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away Beginning to think that I'm wastin' time I don't understand the things I do The world outside looks so unkind I'm countin' on you to carry me through [chorus] And when my mind is free You know a melody can move me And when I'm feelin' blue The guitar's comin' through to soothe me Thanks for the joy that you've given me I want you to know I believe in your song Rhythm and rhyme and harmony You help me along makin' me strong [chorus]
You don't know how you met me; you don't know why You can't turn around and say goodbye All you know is when I'm with you, I make you free And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea I'm singin' Follow me Everything is all right I'll be the one to tuck you in at night And if you wanna leave, I can guarantee You won't find nobody else like me I'm not worried 'bout the ring you wear Cuz as long as no one knows, then nobody can care You're feelin' guilty and I'm well aware But you don't look ashamed and baby I'm not scared [chorus] Won't give you money, I can't give you the sky You're better off if you don't ask why I'm not the reason that you go astray We'll be alright if you don't ask me to stay [chorus] You don't know how you met me; you don't know why You can't turn around and say goodbye All you know is when I'm with you, I make you free And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea [chorus] [chorus] [chorus]

You left me here on your way to paradise You pulled the rug right out from under my life I know where you goin' to, I knew when you came home last night 'Cause your eyes had a mist from the smoke of a distant fire Lord, I was stung, shoulda' seen it come a long time ago When I realized, the reality gave me a role If things are the same then explain why your kiss is so cold and that mist in your eyes feels like rain on the fire in my soul This lying and cryin' is upsettin' and gettin' ya nowhere It don't stack up, so slack up and pack up --- I just don't care Don't let the screen door hit you on your way out Don't you drown when your dreamboat runs onto the ground I'd just like to know: do you love him or just making time By filling his glass with your fast flowing bitter-sweet wine He'll taste the aftertaste when you come home late some night With your eyes all amist from the smoke of a distant fire Girl your eyes have a mist from the smoke of a distant fire Girl your eyes have the mist from the smoke of a distant fire girl your eyes have a mist from the smoke of a distant fire Girl your eyes have a mist from the smoke of a distant . . . A distant fire

I had visions, I was in them I was looking into the mirror To see a little bit clearer The rottenness and evil in me Fingertips have memories Mine can't forget the curves of your body And when I feel a bit naughty I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes (but no one ever does) I'm not sick but I'm not well And I'm so hot cause I'm in Hell I'm not sick but I'm not well And it's a sin to live so well Been around the world and found That only stupid people are breeding The cretins cloning and feeding And I don't even own a tv Put me in the hospital for nerves And then they had to commit me You told them all I was crazy They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee, goddamn you [chorus] I wanna publish zines And rage against machines I wanna pierce my tongue It doesn't hurt, it feels fine The trivial sublime I'd like to turn off time And kill my mind You kill my mind Paranoia, paranoia Everybody's coming to get me Just say you never met me I'm running underground with the moles (Diggin big holes) Hear the voices in my head I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring But if you're bored then you're boring The agony and the irony --- they're killing me [chorus]
It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay And at dinnertime we stopped and walked back to the house to eat And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet" And then she said "I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge --- Today Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge" 'n' Papa said to Mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas "Well Billie Joe never had a lick of sense, pass the biscuits, please There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow" 'n' Mama said it was shame about Billie Joe, anyhow Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge" 'n' Brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night? "I'll have another piece-a apple pie, you know it don't seem right; I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge, And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge" 'n' Mama said to me "Child, what's happened to your appetite? Well, I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite! That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today; Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way: He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge And she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge" A year has come 'n' gone since we heard the news 'bout Billie Joe 'n' Brother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in Tupelo There was a virus going 'round, Papa caught it and he died last Spring And now Mama doesn't seem to wanna do much of anything And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge
I try to discover A little something to make me sweeter Oh baby refrain From breaking my heart I'm so in love with you I'll be forever blue That you gimme no reason Why you make-a-me work so hard That you gimme no That you gimme no That you gimme no That you gimme no soul I hear you calling Oh baby please Give a little respect to me And if I should falter Would you open your arms out to me We can make love not war And live at peace with our hearts I'm so in love with you I'll be forever blue What religion or reason Could drive a man to forsake his lover Don't you tell me no Don't you tell me no Don't you tell me no Don't you tell me no soul [chorus] I'm so in love with you I'll be forever blue That you gimme no reason You know you make-a-me work so hard That you gimme no That you gimme no That you gimme no That you gimme no soul [chorus] [chorus]

I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this: the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Maybe I've been here before I know this room, I've walked this floor I used to live alone before I knew you I've seen your flag on the marble arch love is not a victory march Its a cold and its a broken hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah There was a time you'd let me know What's real and going on below But now you never show it to me do you? And remember when I moved in you? The holy DOVE was moving too And every breath we drew was hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Maybe there's a God above And all I ever learned from love was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you Its not a cry you can hear at night Its not somebody who's seen the light Its a cold and its a broken hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Twenty-five years and my life is still Trying to get up that great big hill of hope For a destination I realized quickly when I knew I should That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man For whatever that means And so I cry sometimes When I'm lyin' in bed Just to get it all out What's in my head And I I am feeling a little peculiar And so I wake in the morning and I step outside And I take a deep breath and I get real high And I scream from the top of my lungs "What's going on?" And I say hey, yea, yea, yea, yea Hey, yea, yea I said hey, what's going on? And I say hey, yea, yea, yea, yea Hey, yea, yea I said hey, what's going on? Ooh, oooh, oooh Ooh, oooh, oooh And I try Oh my God, do I try I try all the time in this institution And I pray Oh my God, do I pray I pray every single day For a revolution And so I cry sometimes When I'm lyin' in bed Just to get it all out What's in my head And I I am feelin' a little peculiar [chorus]
Out in the west Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl Night time would find me in Rosa's cantina Music would play and Felina would whirl Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina Wicked and evil while casting a spell My love was deep for this Mexican maiden I was in love, but in vain, I could tell One night a wild young cowboy came in Wild as the west Texas wind Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing With wicked Felina, the girl that I loved So in anger . . . I challenged his right for the love of this maiden Down went his hand for the gun that he wore My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor Just for a moment I stood there in silence Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there I had but one chance and that was to run Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran Out where the horses were tied I caught a good one, it looked like it could run Up on its back and away I did ride Just as fast as . . . I could from the west Texas town of El Paso Out to the badlands of New Mexico Back in El Paso my life would be worthless Everything's gone; in life nothing is left It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden My love is stronger than my fear of death I saddled up and away I did go Riding alone in the dark Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart And at last here . . . I am on the hill overlooking El Paso I can see Rosa's cantina below My love is strong and it pushes me onward Down off the hill to Felina I go Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys Off to my left ride a dozen or more Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me I have to make it to Rosa's back door Something is dreadfully wrong, for I feel A deep burning pain in my side Though I am trying to stay in the saddle I'm getting weary, unable to ride But my love for . . . Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle I feel the bullet go deep in my chest From out of nowhere Felina has found me Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for One little kiss, then Felina good-bye
I couldn't stop moving when it first took hold It was a warm spring night in the ol' town hall There was a group called The Jokers, they were layin' it down Don'tcha know I'm never gonna lose that funky sound Rock and roll, Hoochie Koo Lawdy mama light my fuse Rock and roll, Hoochie Koo Truck on out and spread the news The skeeters start buzzing 'bout this time o' year I'm goin' round back, she said she'd meet me there We were rollin' in the grass that grows behind the barn When my ears started ringin' like a fire alarm [chorus] Hope ya'll know what I'm talkin' about The way they wiggle that thing, it really knocks me out I'm gettin' high all the time, hope ya'll are too Well come-on a little closer, gonna do it to you [chorus] That I'm tired of payin' dues Done said goodbye to all my blues Lawdy mama light my fuse
[spoken by him] I'm _so_ happy the band's doing well By the way . . . what's with the hair? Is that part of the new "image"? [sung] In the dark, I like to read his mind but I'm frightened of the things I might find Oh, there must be something he's thinking of to tear him away when I tell him that I'm falling in love, why does he say Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry I try so hard not to get upset because I know all the trouble I'll get oh, he tells me tears are something to hide and something to fear and I try so hard to keep it inside so no one can hear [chorus] [spoken by him] What happened? Practice run late? You know, this little "hobby" of yours is going too far Why can't you for *once* do something for me? [spoken by her] Like what? [sung] He wants me . . . but only part of the time He wants me . . . if he can keep me in line [chorus] Hush hush, shut up now, voices carry Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry Oh hush hush, darling, she might overhear Hush hush --- voices carry He said "shut up" He said "shut up" Oh God can't you keep it down Voices carry Hush hush voices carry I wish he would let me talk
Finally I figured out But it took a long, long time But now there's a turnabout Maybe 'cause I'm trying There's been times, I'm so confused All my roads, They lead to you I just can't turn and walk away It's hard to say what it is I see in you Wonder if I'll always be with you But words can't say, And I can't do Enough to prove, It's all for you I thought I'd seen it all 'Cause it's been a long, long time But then we'll trip and fall Wondering if I'm blind There's been times, I'm so confused All my roads, They lead to you I just can't turn and walk away It's hard to say what it is I see in you Wonder if I'll always be with you But words can't say, And I can't do Enough to prove, It's all for you Rain comes pouring down Falling from blue skies Words without a sound Coming from your eyes Finally I figured out But it took a long, long time But now there's a turnabout Maybe cause I'm trying There's been times, I'm so confused All my roads, They lead to you I just can't turn and walk away It's hard to say what it is I see in you Wonder if I'll always be with you But words can't say, And I can't do Enough to prove, It's all for you It's hard to say It's hard to say It's all for you
Rock 'n' roll (rock) Rock 'n' roll Rock 'n' roll (rock) Rock 'n' roll Can you still recall in the Jukebox Hall when the music played And the world span round to a brand new sound in those far off days In their blue suede shoes they would scream and shout As they sang the blues let it all hang out [chorus] Little Queenie bopped at the high school hop dancing to the beat With her U.S. Mail and her pony tail well she looked so sweet Times are changing fast, but we won't forget Though the age is passed we'll be rockin' yet [chorus]
Now when you're feelin' low and the fish won't bite You need a little bit o' soul to put you right You gotta make like you wanna kneel and pray And then a little bit of soul will come your way Now when your girl is gone and you're broke in two You need a little bit o' soul to see you through And when you raise the roof with your rock'n'roll You'll get a lot more kicks with a little bit o' soul And when your party falls 'cause ain't nobody groovin' A little bit o' soul and it really starts movin' Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah And when you're in a mess and you feel like cryin' Just remember this little song of mine And as you go through life tryin' to reach your goal Just remember what I said about a little bit o' soul A little bit o' soul, yeah (a little bit o' soul)
Doin' alright A little jiving on a Saturday night And come what may Gonna dance the day away Jenny was sweet She always smiled for the people she'd meet On trouble or strife She had another way of looking at life The news is blue Had it's own way to get to you What can I do When I remember my time with you Pick up your feet Got to move to the trick of the beat There is no lead Just take your place in the driver's seat Driver's seat Driver's seat
I was travellin' down the road Feelin' hungry and cold I saw a sign sayin' "Food and drinks for everyone" So naturally I thought I would Take me a look inside I saw so much food There was water coming from my eyes Yeah there was ham and there was turkey There was caviar And long tall glasses With wine up to y'ar And somebody grabbed me Threw me out of my chair Said before you can eat You gotta dance like Fred Astaire You know I can't dance you know I can't dance You know I can't dance you know I can't dance I can't dance I am a man of the road A hobo by name I don't seek entertainment Just poultry and game But if it's all the same to you Then yes I will try my hand If you were as hungry as me Then I'm sure you will understand Now wait a minute Of course I can dance, of course I can dance I'm sure I can dance, I'm sure I can dance I can dance I really hit the floor Ah it feels good Look at me dancing I did a two-step quick-step and a bossa nova A little Victor Sylvester and a Rudy Valentino You should have seen me moving Right across the floor Hand me down my tuxedo Next week I'm coming back for more I can dance Oh yes I can dance Look at me dance on the floor moving I feel good I can dance
Owoooooooo Who's that I see walkin' in these woods? Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood! Hey there Little Red Riding Hood You sure are looking good You're everything a big bad wolf could want (Listen to me!) Little Red Riding Hood I don't think little big girls should Go walking in these spooky old woods alone Owoooooooo What big eyes you have The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad So just to see that you don't get chased I think I ought to walk with you for a ways What full lips you have They're sure to lure someone bad So until you get to Grandma's place I think you ought to walk with me and be safe I'm gonna keep my sheep suit on Until I'm sure that you've been shown That I can be trusted walking with you alone Owoooooooo Little Red Riding Hood I'd like to hold you if I could But you might think I'm a big bad wolf so I won't Owoooooooo! What a big heart I have The better to love you with Little Red Riding Hood Even bad wolves can be good I'll try to be satisfied Just to walk close by your side Maybe you'll see things my way Before we get to Grandma's place Little Red Riding Hood You sure are looking good You're everything that a big bad wolf could want Owoooooooo I mean "baaaaaa" Baaa?
They made up their minds and they started packing They left before the sun came up that day An exit to eternal summer slacking But where were they going without ever knowing the way? They drank up the wine and they got to talking They now had more important things to say And when the car broke down, they started walking Where were they going without ever knowing the way? Anyone can see the road that they walk on is paved in gold It's always summer, they'll never get cold Never get hungry, they'll never get old and gray You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere They won't make it home, but they really don't care They wanted the highway, they're happier there today, today Their children woke up and they couldn't find them They left before the sun came up that day They just drove off and left it all behind them Where were they going without ever knowing the way? [chorus] [chorus]
In a little while from now If I'm not feeling any less sour I promise myself to treat myself And visit a nearby tower And climbing to the top Will throw myself off In an effort to Make it clear to whoever Wants to know what it's like When you're shattered Left standing in the lurch at a church Were people saying, "My God, that's tough, She stood him up, No point in us remaining --- We may as well go home" As I did on my own Alone again, naturally To think that only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay Looking forward to (who wouldn't do) The role I was about to play But as if to knock me down Reality came around And without so much as a mere touch Cut me into little pieces Leaving me to doubt Talk about God in His mercy Oh, if he really does exist Why did he desert me? In my hour of need I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally It seems to me that There are more hearts broken in the world That can't be mended Left unattended What do we do What do we do [instrumental] Alone again, naturally Now, looking back over the years And whatever else that appears I remember I cried when my father died Never wishing to hide the tears And at sixty-five years old My mother, God rest her soul, Couldn't understand why the only man She had ever loved had been taken Leaving her to start With a heart so badly broken Despite encouragement from me No words were ever spoken And when she passed away I cried and cried all day Alone again, naturally Alone again, naturally
Cheated and lied, broken so bad You made a vow, never get mad You played the game, though it's unfair They're all the same, who can compare? First you lose trust, then you get worried Night after night, bar after club Dropping like flies, who woke you up? On the front lawn, sprinklers turn on It's not your house, where'd you go wrong? First you get hurt, then you feel sorry Flying like a cannonball, falling to the earth Heavy as a feather when you hit the dirt How am I the lucky one? I do not deserve to wait around forever when you were there first There comes a time in a short life Turn it around, get a rewrite Call it a dark night of the soul Ticking of clocks, gravity's pull First you get close, and you get hurried [chorus] You're growing silent, the silent treatment It's not inviting now, but don't deny what you meant You get excited, you get excited You got a feeling, oh, at least you can pretend You wanna light it, you wanna light it You wanna light it now, the candle from both ends You get excited, you get excited [chorus] [chorus] First you get close, then you get worried
Billy Ray was a preacher's son And when his daddy would visit, he'd come along When they gathered around and started talkin' That's when Billy would take me walkin' Out through the back yard we'd go walkin' Then he'd look into my eyes Lord knows, to my surprise The only one who could ever reach me Was the son of a preacher man The only boy who could ever teach me Was the son of a preacher man Yes, he was, he was, ooh, yes, he was Bein' good isn't always easy No matter how hard I try When he started sweet-talkin' to me He'd come and tell me "Everything is all right" He'd kiss and tell me "Everything is all right" Can I get away again tonight? [chorus] How well I remember The look that was in his eyes Stealin' kisses from me on the sly Takin' time to make time Tellin' me that he's all mine Learnin' from each other's knowin' Lookin' to see how much we've grown and [chorus] [chorus]
Rock and roll, rock, rock and roll Rock and roll, rock, rock and roll Can you still recall In the juke box hall When the music played And the world spun 'round To a brand new sound In those far off days In their blue suede shoes, they would scream and shout As they sang the blues, let it all hang out [chorus] Little Queenie bopped At the high school hop Dancing to the beat With her U.S. Male And her pony tail Well she looked so sweet Times are changing fast, but we won't forget Though the age has passed, they'll be rockin yet [chorus]
Out for the first, the atmosphere is heavy World title lays on the line Strong and proud, he is much older I am the faster, I'm in my prime Third round late, he starts to tire Open cut over his left eye Smelling blood, attack is relentless In the box seats I see his girl cry Crying No mercy, no quarter No place to hide from me or the man Lefts and rights never came in harder No mercy, take it while you can, now! No mercy, take it while you can Back in my corner they scream "No mercy!" "Put him away, don't let him recover!" Someone's eyes drill holes in my head It is his proud determined mother Crying No mercy, no quarter No place to hide from me or the man Rights and wrongs never came in harder No mercy, take it while you can, now! No mercy, take it while you can I wish another could do this thing for me His eyes are flooded . . . God, he can't even see! I've hunted this title but now it don't seem right I fight back tears while I destroy his life [chorus]

Now and then I think of when we were together Like when you said you felt so happy you could die Told myself that you were right for me But felt so lonely in your company But that was love and it's an ache I still remember You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness Like resignation to the end, always the end So when we found that we could not make sense Well you said that we would still be friends But I'll admit that I was glad it was over But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing And I don't even need your love But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough No, you didn't have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records and then change your number I guess that I don't need that though Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now you're just somebody that I used to know Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over But had me believing it was always something that I'd done But I don't wanna live that way Reading into every word you say You said that you could let it go And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know But you didn't have to cut me off Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing And I don't even need your love But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough No, you didn't have to stoop so low Have your friends collect your records and then change your number I guess that I don't need that though Now you're just somebody that I used to know Somebody (I used to know) (Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know Somebody (I used to know) (Somebody) Now you're just somebody that I used to know I used to know, that I used to know, I used to know somebody

I've seen the bright lights of Memphis and the Commodore Hotel And underneath a street lamp, I met a Southern belle Well, she took me to the river where she cast her spell And in that southern moonlight she sang a song so well If you'll be my Dixie chicken I'll be your Tenessee lamb And we can walk together Down in Dixieland Down in Dixieland Well, we made all the hot spots, my money flowed like wine Then that low down southern whiskey began to fog my mind And I don't remember church bells or the money I put down On the white picket fence and boardwalk of the house at the edge of town Oh, but boy, do I remember the strain of her refrain The nights we spent together, and the way she called my name [chorus] Well, it's been a year since she ran away Yes, that guitar player sure could play She always liked to sing along, she's always handy with a song Then one night in the lobby of the Commodore Hotel I chanced to meet a bartender who said he knew her well And as he handed me a drink, he began to hum a song And all the boys there at the bar began to sing along [chorus]
